Fall River Museum of Contemporary Art

The Fall River Museum of Contemporary Art, commonly known as FR MoCA, is a nonprofit, non-collecting contemporary art organization located in Fall River, Massachusetts. Founded in October 2020 by married artists Harry Gould Harvey IV and Brittni Ann Harvey, both natives of the Greater Fall River area, the institution operates as a social practice art project that deliberately blurs boundaries between artist, curator, and institution. Harry Gould Harvey IV renovated the ground floor of a historic granite mill on Bedford Street that housed Merrow Manufacturing, investing what he described as "a lot of sweat equity" with help from a couple of laborers. The founders established a board and structured the organization as a nonprofit, non-collecting art museum, inspired by artist-run European institutions. In 2023, the museum relocated to 44 Troy Street, signing a five-year lease on a renovated space. The institution has since organized three exhibitions annually. In 2024, FR MoCA achieved international visibility by participating in The Salon by NADA & The Community, an invitation-only art fair in Paris, where their booth featured professional artists alongside work by a local high school student. The Harveys, who share a single salary as the only employees, have emphasized that without active fundraising, the nonprofit cannot persist, as there is no endowment. Their backgrounds inform the project: Brittni's parents worked as a truck driver and bartender, while Harry dropped out of high school before building a career that now includes gallery representation in New York.

As a non-collecting kunsthalle-style institution, FR MoCA does not maintain a permanent collection. Instead, it presents rotating exhibitions that span diverse media including installation, sculpture, video, sound, new media, and performance. The programming emphasizes accessibility and cross-dialogue between the global art world and Fall River's community. The museum's educational mission is integrated into its curatorial approach, with the Harveys teaching college-level social practice and studio art courses at New Bedford High School and B.M.C. Durfee High School through University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's Commonwealth Collegiate Academy. In 2024, they launched an intensive summer artists' residency for five high school students, providing hands-on studio time for young people who often work jobs and care for family members while attending school. The programming deliberately challenges traditional museum hierarchies, with Harry Gould Harvey IV curating shows around concepts like "transforming FR MoCA into a collaborative space where the boundaries between artist, curator, and institution are deliberately blurred."

While FR MoCA does not hold a permanent collection, its exhibitions have featured significant contemporary artists and works. The inaugural Group Exhibition #1 in 2020 presented work by Allyson Vieira, Flannery Silva, Brittni Ann Harvey, Michael Assiff, Gregory Kalliche, Zachary John Martin, Susan Mohl Powers, Jeffrey Alan Scudder, and Faith Wilding. Group Exhibition #2 in 2021 included KAWS and Barbara Kruger, Richard Renaldi, and Norbert Garcia Jr. Group Exhibition III presented Bella Carlos, Dorothy Carlos, Tom Forkin, Christopher K. Ho, Brian Oakes, Tim Simonds, and Marisa Takal. The 2025 exhibition [See] [Saw] [Sound] [Wave] centered on a social sculpture by Harry Gould Harvey IV and collaborators, featuring a pair of large white plaster whisper mirrors with concave centers positioned on opposite edges of the gallery, requiring a step stool to access, enabling whispered conversation across fifty-five feet of space. This exhibition also included recorded works by Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros, and Laurie Spiegel; a sound installation by Erik DeLuca; and lithographs and sound-dampening wall-mounted textile panels by Aviva Silverman. The 2026 exhibition "Citadel," curated by Cory John Scozzari, director of Cordova, featured works by Miguel Fernandez de Castro, Joel Dean, Maguette Dieng, Gabriella Torres Ferrer, Emily Jones, Lydia Ourahmane, Kambel Smith, Mina Squalli-Houssaïni, and Viktor Timofeev.

FR MoCA originally occupied the ground floor of a historic granite mill on Bedford Street in Fall River, a building that also housed Merrow Manufacturing. This former textile mill space, most recently used as the Entourage restaurant, was completely renovated by Harry Gould Harvey IV to create the museum's first home. The pandemic-era opening required adapted visitor protocols, including a circular flow with separate entrance and exit, limited capacity, and timed appointments. In 2023, the museum relocated to 44 Troy Street, Unit 1, where it currently operates. The Troy Street location offers general gallery hours of noon to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday, with free admission and no registration required. The building is wheelchair accessible, with limited off-street parking available in the parking lot of GATHER and street parking along Troy Street.
