“From Waste to Art” Museum

The "From Waste to Art" Museum (Azerbaijani: "Tullantıdan sənətə" muzeyi) is a cultural institution in Baku, Azerbaijan, dedicated to promoting the creative reuse of waste materials through art. Established through the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, it is located within the Gala State Historical Ethnographic Reserve and was inaugurated on June 14, 2015. The museum serves as a permanent platform for an annual international exhibition that transforms discarded household items into artworks, positioning environmental awareness at the intersection of contemporary art and sustainable waste management.

The origins of the museum trace back to 2010, when the "From Waste to Art" exhibition was first launched as part of the "Clean Gala" pilot project initiated by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and executed by Clean City OJSC in Gala village. This project introduced alternative waste management approaches to the area. The exhibition became an annual event in 2015, the same year that the permanent museum was established within the Gala State Historical and Ethnographic Reserve to house works from the exhibition. International exhibitions have been held since 2012, with the IV International "Waste to Art" Exhibition coinciding with the museum's opening on June 14, 2015. Subsequent editions followed on October 2, 2016; October 10, 2017; September 30, 2018; and May 27, 2024. Over time, the initiative has grown from a local pilot project into an internationally recognized platform for environmental art.

The museum's collection centers on artworks fabricated entirely from discarded and waste materials, including plastic bottles, polyethylene bags, children's toys, car parts, and cigarette butts. The holdings currently comprise nearly 180 works, the majority of which were created as part of the International "From Waste to Art" exhibitions held annually since 2012. The collection is distinguished by its international character, featuring contributions from local Azerbaijani artists alongside those from over 46 countries. This global participation reflects the museum's broader mission of fostering cross-cultural dialogue on sustainability while demonstrating the aesthetic and conceptual potential of materials that would otherwise contribute to environmental pollution.

Among the identifiable works in the collection are "Qarabağ Pegasus" by Mammad Rashidov and "Soft Paws" by Tatyana Gomzan, both featured in the Fifth International "From Waste to Art" Exhibition in 2016. The 2018 edition of the exhibition included a concert program by Paraguay's "Recycling" Orchestra, a group of children and juveniles who perform on musical instruments constructed from recycled materials. The 2024 exhibition, themed "Create for Peace," united 12 foreign and 18 local artists from nine countries, with works explicitly addressing environmental protection in the context of the Green World Solidarity Year and preparations for COP29 in Azerbaijan.

The museum is situated within the Gala State Historical Ethnographic Reserve, an archaeological and ethnographic museum complex on the outskirts of Baku. Its precise location is at Sulh Street, Gala Settlement, Khazar District, Baku, with coordinates 40.4392°N, 50.1694°W. The Gala Reserve itself preserves historical and ethnographic heritage, providing a context of cultural conservation that complements the museum's focus on environmental preservation through creative practice.

The museum is located in the Gala Settlement of Baku's Khazar District, accessible from central Baku by taxi or ride-sharing services such as Bolt or Uber, with a journey time of approximately 30-40 minutes and typical fares of 20-30 AZN. Public transport options include bus travel from Baku International Bus Terminal to Sumgayit, followed by a local bus or taxi to the museum area. The institution is organized by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation with support from Temiz Sheher OJSC (Clean City), the IDEA Public Union, the Icherisheher State Historical-Architectural Reserve, and Q Gallery. It continues to function as an active exhibition venue and educational resource promoting recycling and responsible waste management through artistic expression.
