Galatasaray Museum

The Galatasaray Museum, officially the Galatasaray University Culture and Art Center (Turkish: Galatasaray Müzesi), is a cultural institution in Istanbul, Turkey, that documents the history and traditions of Galatasaray. Founded in 1868, it holds the distinction of being Turkey's first sports museum. The museum operates under the direction of Münevver Eminoğlu and serves as a repository for the heritage of both Galatasaray High School and Galatasaray Sports Club, one of Turkey's most decorated athletic organizations.

The museum traces its origins to 1868, making it one of the earliest sports museums in the world. It initially opened at Kalamış Bay in the district of the same name. During World War I, rumors circulated that the collection would be seized; following an extraordinary meeting convened by club founder Ali Sami Yen on 15 May 1919, the museum was relocated to the safety of Galatasaray High School. The institution underwent a significant renovation and reopened in December 2009 with a contemporary exhibition concept in the former Galatasaray Post Office building in the Galatasaray neighborhood of Beyoğlu. In 2018, Galatasaray opened a new museum at Rams Park, and most trophies and plaques were transferred there, though the Beyoğlu location remains operational.

The museum's holdings span two principal domains: the educational heritage of Galatasaray High School and the athletic achievements of Galatasaray Sports Club. The collection includes student uniforms, classroom equipment, photographs, and archival materials related to the high school, alongside sports trophies, jerseys, medals, certificates, photographs, and athletic equipment documenting the club's history. The museum also preserves military artifacts, including swords, sabres, rifles, and carbines used by approximately 200 Galatasaray High School alumni who volunteered for service in World War I. The club's trophy count across all sports includes 85 in football, 37 in men's basketball, 37 in women's basketball, 34 in men's volleyball, 13 in women's volleyball, 34 in athletics, 22 in wheelchair basketball, 23 in women's rowing, 38 in men's rowing, 28 in men's water polo, 3 in women's water polo, and 30 in men's swimming.

The most prestigious items in the collection are the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup trophies, both won in 2000. Galatasaray remains the only Turkish club to have secured these two European titles. The museum displays the jersey of Metin Oktay, one of the club's most celebrated footballers. The football trophy cabinet includes 24 Süper Lig titles, 18 Türkiye Cups victories, 17 Turkish Super Cups, 5 Prime Minister's Cups, 15 Istanbul Football League titles, 2 Istanbul Football Cups, 1 Turkish National Division title, 1 50th Year Cup, and the 2000 UEFA Super Cup and 1999-2000 UEFA Cup. While approximately 2,000 trophies and 15 miscellaneous objects are on display, some trophies remain in storage at Galatasaray High School due to space constraints, and the majority of the collection has been moved to the stadium museum at Rams Park.

The museum occupies the former Galatasaray Post Office building in the Galatasaray neighborhood of Beyoğlu, on the European side of Istanbul. The building was restored and remodelled specifically for museum use. The interior is organized across three floors: the first floor is dedicated to Lycee de Galatasaray and Galatasaray University history, the second floor to Galatasaray Sports Club achievements, and the third floor houses administrative units. The Beyoğlu site continues to operate despite the 2018 opening of the new museum at Rams Park.

The Galatasaray Museum is located at Galatasaray High School in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, with telephone contact at 0090 212 249 11 00. The museum is open to visitors daily except Mondays, though it was still in the process of becoming fully active as of the most recent reports. The institution is owned by and operates under Galatasaray University as a cultural center. Visitors should note that while the Beyoğlu location remains open, the most comprehensive display of trophies is now at the Galatasaray Stadium Museum within the Rams Park complex, which also houses the Sports Museum at the Ali Sami Yen Complex.
