Gallery Oldham

Gallery Oldham is a free-to-view public museum and art gallery located in the Cultural Quarter of central Oldham, Greater Manchester, England. Opened in February 2002, it serves as a combined arts and heritage venue that integrates local museum and gallery services for the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham. The institution holds the civic collection of Oldham and functions as a cultural hub for the town, offering exhibitions, library services, and lifelong learning facilities within a single modern building.

Gallery Oldham was established with the opening of its original building in February 2002, designed by the architectural firm Pringle Richards Sharratt. The project represented a consolidation of local museum and gallery services under one roof. In April 2006, an extension was completed to incorporate the Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre, a £13 million addition that expanded the building's educational and community functions. This development reflected a broader strategy of integrating cultural, educational, and civic services in Oldham's town centre.

The gallery's programming draws upon Oldham's art, social history, and natural history collections, supplemented by touring exhibitions, newly commissioned work, contemporary art, international art, and community-produced projects. It holds the civic collection of Oldham and much of the wider Metropolitan Borough of Oldham's holdings. The collection encompasses fine art, social history, and natural history, with particular strengths in works by artists associated with the region. In recent years, the gallery has developed a dedicated collection of studio pottery and displays ceramic works by modern makers.

Gallery Oldham's collections include work by local artists Helen Bradley, William Stott, and Alan Rankle. The holdings also feature work by significant British artists: L. S. Lowry, John William Waterhouse, and Bridget Riley. The permanent display Oldham Stories presents objects and specimens drawn from across the collections, while two additional galleries host temporary exhibitions. The gallery maintains one of the busiest exhibition programmes in the region, mixing touring shows with selections from its own holdings.
