Hague Arts Circle

The Hague Arts Circle, known in Dutch as the Haagse Kunstkring, is an artists' association in The Hague, Netherlands, founded in 1891. Established by painter Théophile de Bock and architect Paul du Rieu, among others, it has served for more than a century as a gathering place for artists and art lovers across multiple disciplines. The association holds particular significance in Dutch art history for hosting pioneering events, including the first retrospective exhibition of Vincent van Gogh in the Netherlands in 1892 and the first Dada meeting in the Netherlands in 1923.

The Haagse Kunstkring was founded on May 1, 1891, by a group that included painter Théophile de Bock, painter Jan Toorop, painter Johan Thorn Prikker, and architect Paul du Rieu. Writer Marcellus Emants became its first chairman. The society initially established itself on the Heerengracht in The Hague. In 1956, it moved to the Denneweg, where it remains. In 1964, following a generous bequest from member Leonora van Bijsterveld, who died in 1955, the Haagse Kunstkring acquired the building at Denneweg 64. This building continues to serve as the association's headquarters and venue for its activities.
