Institut Valencià d'Art Modern

The Institut Valencià d'Art Modern, widely known by the acronym IVAM, is a museum and exhibition space for modern and contemporary art located in the city of Valencia, Spain. Established by the Valencian Government in 1986 and opened to the public in 1989, it holds the distinction of being the first center dedicated to modern art in Spain. The institution plays a significant role in the cultural landscape of Spain and Europe, focusing on the continuous development of art and photography throughout the twentieth century. The Valencian Government established the institute on December 30, 1986, appointing Tomàs Llorens as its first director. Even before the museum building was constructed, the Ministry of Culture of the Generalitat Valenciana was actively assembling the core of the collection, notably acquiring the Julio González works before the opening. The museum officially opened in February 1989, initially utilizing two locations: the main Centre Julio González on Guillem de Castro street and a secondary space in the Centre del Carme, which remained active until 2002. In its inaugural year, IVAM organized a major Joaquín Sorolla exhibition in collaboration with the San Diego Museum of Art, bringing together paintings from collections across Europe and the United States. Leadership of the institution has seen significant transitions. Consuelo Císcar was ousted after ten years following complaints from local critics and artists regarding low programming quality and unprofessional management. José Miguel García Cortés directed the museum from 2014 until September 2020. Nuria Enguita Mayo succeeded him through an international selection process aimed at internationalizing the institution and emphasizing research, collection study, and public-private collaboration, but she resigned in February 2024 citing a lack of government support. Blanca de la Torre is slated to take over as director starting in April 2025.

IVAM's holdings encompass approximately 10,000 to 11,000 works, including paintings, sculptures, graphic art, and a substantial photography collection of around 5,000 pieces. The collection traces the evolution of art and photography in the twentieth century, with a particular emphasis on graphics, photographic art, and photomontages. The permanent display is organized across seven or eight galleries that lead visitors chronologically through the century. In addition to its permanent displays, the museum maintains an active programming schedule, organizing around twenty temporary exhibitions annually, alongside discussions, courses, conferences, workshops, and concerts related to contemporary art. Outdoor exhibitions are also frequently held in front of the museum.

The museum's collection is anchored by several major groups of works. The foundational core is the Julio González collection, which comprises over 400 works by the influential artist. Another major strength is the collection of Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench, featuring more than 100 paintings and over 600 drawings. Additionally, the museum holds 300 works by Miquel Navarro dating from 1964 to 2005, and a dedicated photography collection of 5,000 works.

The museum complex is situated near the historical center of Valencia, in the El Carmen neighborhood. It consists of two primary architectural units. The main facility is the Centre Julio González, a new building that opened in 1989 to house the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. It features eight galleries, with the three largest galleries each containing five exhibition halls, as well as a specialized space for sculpture exhibitions. The second unit is the Sala de la Muralla, which opened in 1991 and is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of painting and photography ranging from the historical avant-garde to the 1970s, as well as contemporary art. This space incorporates the remaining structures of the city's former medieval fortifications, located in the basement of the building. The museum complex underwent an expansion that doubled its size in 2010.
