İzmir Archaeological Museum

The İzmir Archaeological Museum (Turkish: İzmir Arkeoloji Müzesi) is a major regional archaeology museum in İzmir, Turkey. Founded in 1924 and opened to the public in 1927, it ranks among the first archaeological museums established in Western Anatolia. Its holdings span from the Bronze Age through the Byzantine period, with select Ottoman pieces, drawn principally from sites around the Gulf of İzmir and across western Anatolia. The museum occupies a purpose-built structure in the Bahribaba Park in the central Konak district.

The museum was established in 1924 on the site of the abandoned Saint Voukolos Church (Ayavulka/Ayia Vukla) in the Basmane quarter. After three years of museographic preparation, it opened to the public in 1927. Growing collections and intensifying archaeological work in İzmir (ancient Smyrna) and neighboring ancient cities soon demanded larger quarters. In 1951 the institution moved to the National Education Pavilion in the Kültürpark (Culture Park), which was converted into a museum for the purpose. Finally, in 1984, it relocated to its present home, a building constructed expressly for it in Bahribaba Park in Konak.

The museum's collection is classified as regional rather than local because of its breadth and significance. Its total exhibition area covers 5,000 square metres. The chronological range runs from the Bronze Age through the Greek, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods, with some Ottoman material. A lapidarium extends to the 19th century. The geographic scope encompasses western Anatolia, with finds from Bayraklı (ancient Smyrna), Ephesus, Pergamon, Miletus, Aphrodisias, Clazomenae, Teos, and Iasos, among other sites. Two gardens, one in front and one behind the building, are designed to evoke the history of western Anatolia.

The ground floor houses sarcophagi, notably from Clazomenae, and an extensive collection of funerary stelae, especially rich in Late Hellenistic examples. Sculptural remains from the Belevi Mausoleum are also displayed here. The first floor presents statues and busts arranged chronologically, including a notable statue of an athlete from Cyme. The second floor holds figurines, ceramics, lamps, coins, and jewellery from various sites across western Anatolia, spanning prehistory to the Byzantine era.

The present building, opened in 1984, was purpose-built in Bahribaba Park in the Konak district. The structure comprises three floors, which accommodate exhibition galleries alongside administrative offices, a library, storage depots, laboratories for education and conservation, and a conference hall. The outdoor areas include front and rear gardens that complement the narrative of western Anatolian history.

The museum is located in Konak, in the central part of İzmir, within walking distance of Konak Square. It is publicly owned and operated, with official information available through its website at www.izmirmuzesi.gov.tr. The museum continues to serve as a principal institution for the display and study of the archaeological heritage of the Aegean region of Turkey.
