Juan Martín de Pueyrredón Museum

The Museo Histórico Municipal "Brigadier General Juan Martín de Pueyrredón," commonly known as the Museo Pueyrredón, is a historic house museum in Acassuso, a neighborhood in the partido of San Isidro, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Located at Rivera Indarte 48, the museum preserves the estate where Brigadier General Juan Martín de Pueyrredón, who served as Director Supremo of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, lived and died. The institution holds significance as both a memorial to a central figure in Argentine independence and as one of the finest surviving examples of colonial Rioplatense architecture, dating from 1790.

The house, originally known as "Casa de la Chacra del Bosque Alegre," occupied land that had been part of the allotment of agricultural plots carried out by Juan de Garay in 1580. The property once extended between the coastal bluffs of the Río de la Plata and the road famously called "Fondo de la Legua." The estate was designated a National Historic Monument in 1941, and the museum was inaugurated on September 16, 1944. After decades of public operation, restoration and remodeling work began in 2007. The project concluded in April 2009, when the museum was reopened by Mayor Gustavo Posse.

The museum's holdings span multiple categories: historical, architectural, documentary, bibliographic, pictorial, ecological, and landscape. The collection is anchored in furnishings, portraits, objects, and documents connected to General Pueyrredón's life and his role in Argentine history during the early nineteenth century. The house itself is presented as a period environment, furnished with items of daily life from that era. A particular strength is the presence of paintings by Prilidiano Pueyrredón, son of Juan Martín de Pueyrredón, who became one of the most significant artists in nineteenth-century Argentine painting.

The signature works include the paintings of Prilidiano Pueyrredón, displayed within the authentically preserved rooms of the family residence. The museum also preserves objects and documents that illustrate the general's political and military career. The gardens facing the Río de la Plata contain tree species that have survived for more than two centuries, forming a living component of the museum's heritage.

The house, dating from 1790, exemplifies the typical construction of a late-eighteenth-century country estate, or quinta, in the Río de la Plata region. Its architecture represents the colonial Rioplatense style at its most refined. The property's historical importance was recognized long before its conversion to museum use, and its riverside gardens remain integral to its character.
