Lubin House

The Joseph I. Lubin House is a Syracuse University satellite facility located at 11 East 61st Street in the Lennox Hill neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Functioning as the university's New York City headquarters since 1964, the building provides a vital metropolitan hub for academic programs, admissions, alumni engagement, and cultural exhibitions. It houses operational workspaces, event spaces, and the Louise and Bernard Palitz Gallery, an extension of the Syracuse University Art Museum.

The townhouse was originally designed by architect John G. Prague and constructed in 1876. It underwent a series of ownership changes and renovations by prominent figures, including C.P.H. Gilbert, who expanded the structure in 1883, and the firm McKim, Mead and White, who added imported European mantelpieces in 1897. In 1923, architects Delano and Aldrich covered the facade with brick, establishing its current neo-federal appearance. The property served as a private residence for individuals such as John Teele Pratt and Charles Shipman Payson, and later as an annex for the Russian Consulate and the 29 Club. In 1964, following the disbanding of the 29 Club, New York philanthropist and Syracuse University lifetime trustee Joseph I. Lubin purchased the building. Syracuse University officially opened the facility as its alumni center on June 4, 1965, and renamed it the Joseph I. Lubin House in December 1965 in honor of his benefaction. The university acquired the adjacent five-story building at 15 East 61st Street in 1966, which was renovated into usable university space by 1995 following another major gift from Lubin. Infrastructure and historic restoration work on the primary building was completed in 2002.

The second floor of the facility hosts the Louise and Bernard Palitz Gallery, which serves as the Syracuse University Art Museum's visual arts venue in midtown Manhattan. The gallery's exhibition program draws primarily from the extensive permanent collection of the Syracuse University Art Museum. Its scope extends to works by university alumni and faculty, as well as pieces from institutional partners including Light Work, Point of Contact Gallery, and the Community Folk Art Center. Additionally, the gallery has exhibited works on loan from private collectors or external galleries, and it has hosted site-specific installations by contemporary artists.

While the gallery's program rotates regularly, a specific upcoming exhibition highlights the work of alumnus John Thompson. Scheduled for June 8, 2026 through September 30, 2026, the retrospective John Thompson '72: Infinite Variation focuses on his experimental approach to printmaking, showcasing how he observed and abstracted patterns from the world around him to create varied images. Beyond the gallery's rotating art displays, the building itself retains notable interior architectural elements, specifically the elaborate European mantelpieces imported during the 1897 renovation by the firm McKim, Mead and White, which remain in the house today.

Its construction materials consist of brownstone and brick. Initially designed by John G. Prague in 1876, the building received its current neo-federal facade in 1923 when architects Delano and Aldrich covered the exterior with brick and altered the original dormer windows. The interior layout was significantly modified over time, including the addition of extra floors, an elevator, a skylight over the stairwell installed during a 1912 renovation by C.P.H. Gilbert, and extended dining spaces.

The Palitz Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is closed on weekends and university holidays. General building business hours run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday from September through June, shifting to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday during July and August.
