Madrid Wax Museum

The Madrid Wax Museum (Spanish: Museo de cera de Madrid) is a wax museum situated on the Paseo de Recoletos in Madrid, Spain, at the edge of Plaza de Colón. Opened in 1972, it houses over 450 life-size wax figures arranged in thematic scenes, blending historical Spanish narrative with international celebrity culture, fictional characters, and immersive attractions. It remains one of the city's established visitor destinations, drawing approximately 216,000 visitors annually as of 2023, though this figure has declined from a peak of 341,000 in 2006.

The museum opened on 14 February 1972, inaugurated by Alfredo Sánchez Bella, then Minister of Information and Tourism. Its creation involved extensive research, selection, and reconstruction of settings and figures, with participation by professionals who had received Academy Awards for their work. Since its founding, the institution has expanded its scope beyond traditional wax portraiture to incorporate environmental simulation, sound design, and amusement-park-style attractions, reflecting evolving approaches to museum entertainment across subsequent decades.

The collection spans entertainment, sport, art, science, literature, and history, with particular attention to Spanish historical narrative. Figures are presented largely in scenographic tableaux rather than as isolated portraits. The museum has placed special emphasis on reflecting children's interests through representations of popular family and fantasy characters. Three principal attractions supplement the static displays: a motion simulator featuring icy tunnels, the center of the Earth, and space; a horror train journeying through Jurassic Park, the Galactic Tavern, famous murders, and other scenarios; and Multivisión, a multi-projector cinema presentation on the second floor that uses 27 projectors simultaneously to narrate the history of Spain. Among the more than 450 figures, specific named subjects include Christopher Columbus, Fidel Castro, Mary Poppins, Benedict XVI, Superman, the Catholic Monarchs, Cleopatra, Cervantes writing Don Quixote, General Franco, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise, the Spanish royal family alongside Prime Minister Zapatero, Bart Simpson, bullfighter Manolete in combat, the Beatles, Harry Potter, Montserrat Caballé, Donald Trump, and footballers Fernando Torres and Raúl. Children's and fictional characters represented include the Simpson Family, Harry Potter, Mortadelo y Filemón, Snow White, and Frodo from The Lord of the Rings. More recent additions have included Hollywood actors, American cowboys, famous athletes, the Pope, and Donald and Melania Trump.

The museum is located at Paseo de Recoletos No. 41, on the corner of Plaza de Colón and Calle de Génova, within a commercial building. The exhibition space is distributed across two floors. The ground floor contains wax figures of well-known Spanish and international personalities, while the second floor is devoted to the presentation of Spanish history through character tableaux and the Multivisión cinema installation. The site offers direct access to the Colón metro station, served by Line 4 of the Madrid Metro.

The Madrid Wax Museum operates as a private cultural attraction, owned and managed independently rather than as a public institution.
