Missoula Art Museum

The Missoula Art Museum (MAM) is a contemporary art museum located in Missoula, Montana. Founded in 1975, it holds the distinction of being accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, a status it has maintained since 1987. The institution serves as a vital cultural hub, dedicated to collecting, preserving, studying, and exhibiting art rooted in the culture of the American West, with particular emphasis on contemporary American Indian art and Montana modernism.

The museum originated from a community effort to repurpose the former Carnegie Library building after the Missoula Public Library relocated to Main Street in 1972. Lela Autio organized a pioneering exhibition of contemporary textiles by artists Nancy Erickson and Dana Boussard within the vacant building. Alongside Mayor George Turman, his wife Kay, and other community members and artists, Autio championed the conversion of the space into an art museum. The institution officially opened as the Missoula Museum of the Arts in March 1975. In 1987, the museum began actively collecting and accessioning artworks and achieved accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums. It transitioned into a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 1995. Following a $5.3 million capital campaign, the museum underwent a major renovation and expansion, reopening in September 2006. Upon completion of this project, which fused the historic library with a contemporary addition, the institution officially changed its name to the Missoula Art Museum.

The museum's collection comprises approximately 1,800 works, 192 of which were acquired between 1975 and 1994. These early holdings include the Missoula County art collection, which is now managed by the museum. The collection's mission focuses on preserving the emerging cultural heritage of the region through the lens of Western American culture, specifically prioritizing contemporary American Indian art and Montana modernism. In addition to its gallery displays, the museum maintains an off-site exhibition program, placing artworks in various public buildings across the city, county, and state, including city hall, planning departments, the district court, the courthouse, and county offices.

The cornerstone of the museum's holdings is the Contemporary American Indian Art Collection (CAIAC), established in 1997 following a gift of prints by Native American artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. The CAIAC has since grown into the largest collection of contemporary American Indian art in Montana and holds the distinction of being the largest collection of Quick-to-See Smith's work in any museum. Prominent Native American artists represented in the CAIAC include Corwin Clairmont, Gail Tremblay, and George Longfish. Reflecting its grassroots origins, the museum also maintains strong holdings of Montana Modernists, featuring works by Rudy Autio, Frances Senska, Lela Autio, Robert and Gennie DeWeese, Maxine Blackmer, Freeman Butts, and Walter Hook.

Situated in the heart of historic downtown Missoula, the museum building is a seamless fusion of the 100-year-old Carnegie Library and a contemporary addition completed in 2006. This $5.3 million renovation and expansion project provides 6,000 square feet of exhibition space distributed across six galleries. The facility also houses a library, an education center, and a visitor information space. As a public museum, the building is fully accessible and offers free admission to all visitors.
