Overview

Moderna Museet Malmö is a museum of modern and contemporary art situated in Malmö, Sweden. Inaugurated on December 26, 2009, it operates as a branch of the state-owned Moderna Museet in Stockholm while maintaining an independent exhibition program. The institution provides a meeting place and cultural attraction for the Skåne region, southern Sweden, Denmark, and northern Germany, offering an art experience unique to the Oresund region.

Founding & history

The establishment of Moderna Museet Malmö resulted from an inquiry by the City of Malmö to the Moderna Museet in Stockholm to open a subsidiary. This led to a collaboration among the City of Malmö, Region Skåne, and the Swedish government. The museum opened its doors on December 26, 2009. Iris Müller-Westermann has served as director since January 1, 2017.

Collection scope

Rather than maintaining a permanent collection on site, Moderna Museet Malmö functions as an experimental and dynamic venue with a constantly changing exhibition program. It typically hosts around three major exhibitions per year, featuring Swedish, Nordic, and international art. The displays range from early twentieth-century modernism to contemporary art, interspersing temporary art history exhibitions drawn from the parent institution's rich collection with works by important contemporary artists and modern classics. The media represented include painting, sculpture, photography, design, and digital works.

Building & site

The museum is located in the Gamla staden district of Malmö at Ola Billgrens plats 2-4, formerly Gasverksgatan 22. Its main building originally housed an electricity plant established in 1901, specifically the historic turbine halls of the Malmö electric works. The building was previously transformed into an exhibition hall that housed the Rooseum Centre for Contemporary Art from 1988 to 2006. Before Moderna Museet Malmö moved in, the interior was transformed again and a new annex was built by Tham & Videgård Arkitekter. The renovation preserved the industrial elements while introducing modern facilities, yielding approximately 900 square meters of exhibition space divided between the turbine halls and smaller galleries.

Visiting

The museum is centrally located, approximately a ten-minute walk from the Malmö Central Station. It offers a varied program that includes educational activities, such as a weekly mini-tour and workshop session for parents and children every Sunday. The facility also houses a cafe, Kafé Sisko, and a museum shop offering books on art, photography, design, and modern culture.
