Museo archeologico nazionale di Orvieto

The Museo archeologico nazionale di Orvieto is the national archaeological museum of Orvieto, a city in the region of Umbria, central Italy. Established in 1982, it occupies a section of the late 13th-century Papal Palace (Palazzo Martino IV) on Piazza Duomo, immediately adjacent to the city's cathedral. The museum holds particular significance as the principal repository for archaeological materials excavated in the territory surrounding Orvieto, one of the most important Etruscan urban centers in Italy. Its collections illuminate the pre-Roman and ancient history of the region, with particular emphasis on Etruscan burial customs, domestic life, and artistic production.

The museum was inaugurated in 1982, consolidating archaeological materials that had previously been dispersed. Its core collection derived from the archaeological section of the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, which had held finds from the territory up to the 19th century. A significant enhancement came with the transfer of detached frescoes from the Etruscan tombs of Golini in Porano, which had until 1982 been kept at the National Archaeological Museum of Florence. Since December 2014, the institution has been administered by the Ministry of Culture through the Polo museale dell'Umbria, which became the Direzione regionale Musei in December 2019.

The museum's holdings consist exclusively of archaeological remains from sites in the Orvieto region, displayed on a single level. The collections span multiple categories of material culture, including ceramics, bronzes, and jewelry. Particular strengths lie in materials from Etruscan necropoleis, which document burial practices, social hierarchy, and daily life. The museum features reconstructed tomb chambers with fragmentary frescoes that illustrate Etruscan customs, notably including scenes related to Etruscan cuisine and banqueting. The collections are complemented by those of the separate Museo Claudio Faina, located across Piazza Duomo, with which the museum shares thematic coverage of Orvieto's archaeological heritage.

Among the museum's most significant holdings are the detached frescoes from the Etruscan tombs of Golini in Porano, transferred from Florence in 1982. These painted fragments are displayed within reconstructed tomb settings. The museum also preserves materials from major Etruscan necropoleis including Settecamini, the Crocifisso del Tufo necropolis, and the Cannicella necropolis. Notable object categories include architectural terracottas such as antefixes and acroteria, as well as bronze items and personal ornaments. The tomb reconstructions incorporating fresco fragments offer rare visual evidence of Etruscan funerary customs and domestic rituals.

The museum is housed in the Palazzo Papale, specifically in the section known as Palazzo Martino IV, a Gothic-style building dating from the late Duecento (late 13th century). The palace is situated on Piazza Duomo, to the right and at the rear of the cathedral. The museum occupies the ground floor of this papal residence, in a position attached near the crossing to the south of the cathedral building. This prominent location in the heart of Orvieto's monumental center places the museum in direct physical and visual dialogue with the city's medieval and religious architecture.

The museum is located in Piazza Duomo in central Orvieto, within the historic core of the city.
