Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto Canada

The Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto Canada (MOCA) is an independent, registered charitable organization and art museum located in Toronto, Ontario. Founded in 1999 as the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (MOCCA), it emerged from the former Art Gallery of North York and has since become a significant institution in Canada's contemporary art landscape. The museum operates without a permanent collection of its own, instead managing a city-owned collection while focusing on exhibitions, research, and collaborative programming that connects Toronto to national and international contemporary art networks.

MOCA traces its origins to 1999, when it was established from the former Art Gallery of North York under the name Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art. In 2005, MOCCA relocated to a repurposed textile factory in the West Queen West Art + Design District, with the City of Toronto funding a half-million-dollar renovation. This location became a vital hub for creative exchange, hosting over 200 exhibitions and featuring work by more than 1,100 Canadian and international artists, with annual attendance reaching 40,000 visitors. As the lease on this building neared its end and the site faced demolition for condominium development, the museum sought a larger space. In 2016, it changed its name to the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto Canada (MOCA). Chantal Pontbriand served as director from 2015 to 2016. In September 2018, MOCA moved into a renovated 55,000 square foot former factory in the Lower Junction district, with funding support from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund. The museum is affiliated with the Canadian Museums Association, the Ontario Museum Association, and the Ontario Association of Art Galleries.

The museum does not maintain a permanent collection of its own. Instead, it manages a collection belonging to the City of Toronto. As of 2009, this collection comprised approximately 400 works by about 150 artists. The museum's programming has emphasized collaborative partnerships with artists, organizations, institutions, and festivals both locally and internationally, functioning as a connector between Toronto and broader global networks. Its exhibition history has encompassed both solo and group presentations, including shows featuring non-Canadian artists. Since 2001, MOCA has also organized exhibitions and projects abroad in countries including the United States, China, Taiwan, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

MOCA's current home is a renovated former factory in the Lower Junction district, which the museum entered in September 2018. The building, dating from 1919, provides more than 5,500 square metres of space, more than doubling the museum's previous exhibition area. The facility was developed with support from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund. This location in the Junction Triangle area represents the museum's third site, following its origins in North York and its 2005-2015 tenure in the West Queen West Art + Design District, where it occupied a repurposed textile factory that had been renovated with city funding.
