National Museum of Contemporary Art

The National Museum of Contemporary Art, commonly abbreviated as EMST from its Greek name (Ethniko Mouseio Synchronis Technis), is a national institution in Athens dedicated to exhibiting contemporary Greek and international art. Established in October 2000, it fills a critical institutional gap in the capital, which previously lacked a major museum focused solely on contemporary art. Under the leadership of its founding director, Anna Kafetsi, the museum developed a curatorial and educational framework that positions it as a central hub for modern artistic production in Greece.

Athens long lacked a dedicated contemporary art museum, a void highlighted by the 1994 founding of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki. In the 1990s, the Athens subway authority, Attica Metro, acquired the former Fix Brewery with plans to demolish it for a park-and-ride garage. Architecture advocates occupied the building to demand cultural reuse, resulting in a compromise where half the structure was demolished for an underground garage while the remainder was transferred to the state in 2000 for cultural purposes. EMST was officially established that October, initially operating on the brewery's ground floor. As the institution developed, it utilized various interim spaces, including the Athens Conservatory from 2008 to 2015, and hosted public events at the Athens School of Fine Arts. A major milestone occurred in 2017 when the building served as the primary venue for documenta 14 in Athens. By 2020, the Greek government had invested 40 million euros in the project, supplemented by a 3 million euro donation from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to support permanent collection installation. However, prolonged renovation delays cost the museum a 3.3 million dollar European Union subsidy. Anna Kafetsi served as founding director until 2014, followed by Katerina Koskina (2014-2018), interim directors Dimitris Antonakakis and Syrago Tsiara (2019-2021), and Katerina Gregos from 2021 onward.

The museum's collection is structured along two primary axes: a historical trajectory covering the second half of the 20th century, and a contemporary focus on current practices. EMST actively grows its holdings through purchases and donations, aiming to build a core collection representative of major directions in contemporary art. The scope encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, installations, new media, and experimental architecture. A particular strength lies in its extensive video art collection. Beyond exhibitions, the institution maintains a library, archives, and departments dedicated to research, educational programming for all ages, and bilingual publications including exhibition catalogs and critical essays.

The permanent collection features approximately 170 works by nearly 80 artists, situated on the top three floors of the museum. The holdings include significant international acquisitions by artists such as Ilya Kabakov, Stephen Antonakos, Gary Hill, and Allan Sekula. Its distinguished video art collection features prominent figures like Bill Viola, Bruce Nauman, Nam June Paik, Marina Abramovic and Ulay, Mona Hatoum, and Vito Acconci. Greek artists are heavily represented by figures including Vlassis Caniaris, Nikos Kessanlis, Costas Tsoclis, and Chryssa. In early 2022, the museum greatly expanded its holdings through a donation of 140 artworks from the Dimitris Daskalopoulos Collection, adding major pieces by Kutlug Ataman, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Paul McCarthy, Ana Mendieta, Annette Messager, and numerous Greek contemporaries.

EMST is housed in the former Fix Brewery, located in the Neos Kosmos neighborhood near the center of Athens, approximately 600 meters south of the Acropolis Museum. The brewery was originally constructed in 1961 by Greek architects Takis Zenetos and Margaritis Apostolidis, both students of Le Corbusier, and stands as a notable example of postwar industrial architecture. Following the partial demolition of the building, an international competition awarded the renovation project to 3SK Stylianidis Architects, working in collaboration with Ioannis Mouzakis and Associates. The extensive renovation, which began around 2007, transformed the industrial ruin into state-of-the-art museum facilities. Upon reopening in February 2020, the building provided nearly 20,000 square meters of space dedicated to permanent and temporary exhibitions, educational workshops, a library, and archives.

The National Museum of Contemporary Art is located in the Kynosargous quarter of Athens, Greece. Following years of interim programming and extensive renovations, the museum reopened to the public in its permanent home in February 2020. It now operates with full facilities, offering access to its permanent collection, temporary exhibition spaces, archives, and a specialized library. The museum also plays an active civic role through its educational programs, which include school group visits, family workshops, adult tours, and educator seminars designed to familiarize diverse audiences with global contemporary art.
