National Museum of Medieval Art

The National Museum of Medieval Art (Albanian: Muzeu Kombëtar i Artit Mesjetar) is a national museum in Korçë, Albania, dedicated to medieval art and history. Located on Fan Noli Boulevard in the south-east of the city, it holds one of the most significant collections of Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons in Europe. Established in 1980, the museum preserves and displays over 7,000 art and cultural objects that trace the development of Albanian iconography from the 13th century onward. The museum was established on April 24, 1980, during the socialist period in Albania, as a state institution devoted to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting medieval artistic heritage. On October 4, 2016, the reconstructed museum reopened following cooperation between the Korçë city municipality and a Greek Government fund, which provided financial support for the renovation. The principal hall displays approximately 200 works, combining anonymous creations from the 13th and 14th centuries with pieces by named masters of Albanian icon painting. Attributed artists include Onufri, the most celebrated figure in Albanian medieval art; Onufër Qiprioti; Teacher Kostandini; Jeromak Shpataraku; David Selenica; and the Zografi Brothers. The French and Italian sources also name Kostandin Shpataraku among the recognized artists, while the Spanish source additionally mentions Simone de Ardeniza. These painters represent the canonical tradition of Albanian iconography, blending Byzantine formal conventions with local stylistic developments. The concentration of works by these masters makes the museum an essential research destination for scholars of Balkan and Orthodox Christian art.

The museum occupies a building on Fan Noli Boulevard in the south-east of Korçë, a location that places it within one of Albania's most historically significant cultural centers. The original structure dated from the pre-1980 period and was entirely reconstructed in 2016. The Greek Government fund contributed to this rebuilding, reflecting cross-border cultural cooperation in the preservation of shared Orthodox heritage.
