Norwegian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design

The Norwegian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design (Norwegian: Kunstindustrimuseet) was a museum in Oslo, Norway, dedicated to decorative arts and design. Founded in 1876, it was one of the first institutions of its kind in Europe. The museum became administratively part of the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design (Nasjonalmuseet for kunst, arkitektur og design) in 2003, closed permanently on 16 October 2016, and its collections were subsequently transferred to the new National Museum building, which opened in 2022.

The museum was established in 1876 on the initiative of Lorentz Dietrichson and Nicolay Nicolaysen. Henrik A. Grosch (1848-1929), nephew of the noted architect Christian Heinrich Grosch, served as its first director. Initially located at St. Olavsgate 1 in Oslo, the museum moved in 1904 to share premises with the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry. In 2003, it was absorbed administratively into the newly formed National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design. The museum ceased operations on 16 October 2016, with its holdings relocated to the purpose-built National Museum complex that opened in 2022.

The museum's collection encompassed clothing, textiles, furniture, silver, glass, ceramics, and handicrafts, representing a comprehensive survey of Norwegian and international decorative arts. The breadth of these holdings reflected the institution's founding mission to document and display the applied arts as a field equal in importance to fine art.

From 1904 onward, the museum was housed in a building designed by architects Adolf Bredo Greve (1871-1931) and Ingvar M. O. Hjorth (1862-1927). This structure was shared with the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry, reflecting the close historical relationship between design education and museum display in Norway. The building at this location served as the museum's home for over a century until its closure in 2016.

The Norwegian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design was located in Oslo Municipality, Norway. Following its closure on 16 October 2016, the museum no longer operates as an independent visiting destination. Its collections are now accessible to the public at the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, which opened in a new building in 2022.
