Pātaka Art + Museum

Pātaka Art + Museum, formally the Pātaka Museum of Arts and Cultures, is a municipal museum and art gallery in Porirua City, New Zealand, within the Wellington Region. Established in 1980 and relocated to its present building in 1998, it occupies the structure known as Te Marae o Te Umu Kai o Hau. The institution functions as the cultural heart of Porirua, a city approximately 15 minutes from Wellington, and is distinguished by its dedication to contemporary Māori and Pacific arts alongside broader New Zealand, Asian, and international contemporary art. Its name, Pātaka, derives from the Māori word for 'storehouse', reflecting its role as a repository and showcase for cultural production.

The institution's origins trace to 1980, when the Porirua Museum opened at a site in Takapūwāhia. By 1997, that museum had outgrown its premises. Concurrently, the Mana Community Arts Council sought to expand its community art gallery, then located at the corner of Parumoana and Norrie Streets. The two organisations amalgamated and, in 1998, moved into a renovated and expanded building. Two figures were central to this development: Bob Cater, who co-founded Page 90, the precursor to Pātaka, and who was subsequently awarded the Queen's Service Medal; and Darcy Nicholas, appointed a Companion of the Queen's Service Order, in part for his role in establishing the museum. The architectural firm Architecture + designed the transformation, converting a 1970s office building into the present cultural facility. The project garnered significant recognition, including the NZIA Resene Branch Award 1999, the Dulux Colour Award 1999, a Carter Holt Harvey award commendation 1999, the Victoria University of Wellington School of Architecture 25th Anniversary Alumni Supreme Award together with an Educational, Cultural and Community Award, and the NZIA Resene Regional Award 2000.

Pātaka's collection and exhibition programme centres on contemporary Māori and Pacific arts, supplemented by contemporary New Zealand, Asian, and international art and culture. The institution maintains a commitment to both established and emerging artists, with rotating exhibitions ensuring ongoing renewal of displayed works. Community engagement forms a significant component of its operation, supported by workshops, talks, and educational programmes developed in collaboration with schools and local organisations. The Bottle Creek Gallery is specifically dedicated to community and local artists, reinforcing the museum's connection to its immediate environment.

Among the museum's specific gallery spaces, the Daylight Gallery holds particular significance as the site of a semi-permanent exhibition titled Whiti Te Rā!, which addresses Ngāti Toa Rangatira, the local Māori iwi. The other principal galleries, the Front Gallery, West Gallery, and Maude & Miller Gallery, host changing exhibitions. The Bottle Creek Gallery serves as the dedicated venue for community and local artistic production.

The building, Te Marae o Te Umu Kai o Hau, opened in 1998 and was designed by Architecture + through the adaptive reuse of a 1970s office structure. The existing building already accommodated the Porirua City Library, Whitireia's performance space, and the Page 90 gallery. The redesigned facility features an atrium running the full length of the building, connecting the Porirua Library, reception, shop, café, performing arts studio, meeting and events rooms, and an exterior courtyard. A Japanese garden is situated within this courtyard. The architectural intervention has been recognised with multiple awards for its design quality and community function.

Pātaka Art + Museum is located in Porirua City within the Wellington Region, approximately 15 minutes from Wellington.
