Pazo de Castro Monteagudo

The Pazo de Castro Monteagudo is an 18th-century baroque urban mansion located on Pasantería Street, adjacent to the Plaza de la Leña in the heart of the old town of Pontevedra, Spain. Constructed in 1760, it holds significance as the first headquarters of the Pontevedra Museum. Acquired and adapted for museum use in the late 1920s, the building opened its doors to the public on August 10, 1929, coinciding with the local festivities in honor of A Virxe Peregrina. Today, it remains a vital part of the museum's six-building complex, housing important archaeological and art collections.

The pazo was built in 1760 by José de Castro Monteagudo, the first auditor of the maritime province of Pontevedra, a fact confirmed by a Latin document discovered during later renovations. Before its museum conversion, the building served varied commercial and educational functions: the upper floor housed a boys' school, while the ground floor accommodated a shop named La Imperial, a restaurant called La Flor, and a carpentry workshop. In 1928, the Pontevedra Provincial Council purchased the property from Casimiro Gómez Cobas for 52,000 pesetas to establish the museum. Castelao, the museum's founding patron, actively influenced the remodeling, corresponding with co-founder Francisco Javier Sánchez Cantón and providing detailed drawings for the interior layout and upper balcony, most of which were implemented. Expansion began in April 1936. In 1943, architect Robustiano Fernández Cochón oversaw the addition of a connecting arch to the adjacent Pazo de García Flórez and incorporated a tower into the structure.

As a component of the Pontevedra Museum, the Pazo de Castro Monteagudo exhibits a diverse range of historical and artistic artifacts. Its galleries are dedicated to archaeology, featuring prehistoric finds such as necklaces and Roman pieces from sites like Caldas de Reis. The building also holds significant pre-Roman and Roman gold and silverware, including civil and sacred silver pieces donated by Gonzalo Fernández de la Mora y Mon predating 1900. The fine art collection encompasses Spanish, Italian, and Flemish paintings spanning the 15th to the 18th centuries, covering Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.

The painting collection within the pazo includes works by notable artists such as Pedro Berruguete, Juan Correa de Vivar, Eugenio Cajés, and Juan Pantoja de la Cruz. The archaeological holdings feature prehistoric artifacts and Roman finds excavated from the archaeological site at Caldas de Reis. Additionally, the silverware collection features notable pre-Roman and Roman jewelry and liturgical objects, supplemented by the early 20th-century civil and sacred silver donation from Gonzalo Fernández de la Mora y Mon.

The urban mansion features an austere main facade on Pasantería Street, structured with a central balcony door and two flanking windows on the upper floor, and a central entrance door with two windows on the ground floor. The south facade is distinguished by a stone balcony supported by large modillions, which bear three stone columns holding up the roof. At the end of this facade sits the tower added in 1943, complete with multiple windows and a balcony. The building displays the coat of arms of Pontevedra on both the tower and the facade facing the interior garden. The property encompasses 739 square meters of constructed area. Following a renovation approved in 2022, the interior is being redesigned to be open and free of obstacles, retaining only the original load-bearing walls for a unified appearance, and will feature a broad underground connection to the Pazo de García Flórez.
