Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery

Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery is the principal museum and art gallery of the city of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, England. Established in 1880 and finding its permanent home in 1931, it houses the historical and art collections of the city. The museum traces its origins to the Peterborough Natural History, Scientific and Archaeological Society, formed in 1871. In 1887 it moved to Becket Chapel on Cathedral grounds, then in 1907 to Barrass Memorial Hall on Queen Street, all of which have since been demolished. When Barrass Memorial Hall was purchased by a printing company in 1925, the Society rented a building on Park Road that later became the Theatre Royal. The current building on Priestgate was acquired and donated to the Society in 1931 by Sir Percy Malcolm Stewart, with the art gallery constructed in 1939. The building was presented to the city by the Peterborough Museum Society in 1968. From 2010 to 2019, Vivacity, an independent not-for-profit organisation, managed the museum on behalf of the city council. It is now managed by Peterborough Limited, a Local Authority Trading Company under Peterborough City Council.

The museum's collection encompasses approximately 227,000 objects across multiple disciplines. Its holdings include local archaeology and social history, from products of the Roman pottery industry to a collection of marine fossil remains of international importance from the Jurassic period. The museum also preserves original manuscripts of John Clare, the nineteenth-century poet known in his own time as the Northamptonshire Peasant Poet. A significant historical collection comprises items made by French prisoners of war at Norman Cross Prison, which operated on the outskirts of Peterborough from 1797 to 1814 and is believed to have been the world's first purpose-built prisoner-of-war camp. The art collection contains paintings, prints, and drawings ranging from the seventeenth century to the present day.

Among the museum's notable holdings are the original manuscripts of John Clare, preserving the literary heritage of this important English poet. The Norman Cross collection of prisoner-of-war craft objects represents a unique historical record of the experiences of French captives during the Napoleonic Wars. The Jurassic marine fossil collection holds international scientific significance Picard significance, while the Roman pottery industry materials document the region's ancient manufacturing economy. The art collection's chronological breadth from the seventeenth century to contemporary works provides a comprehensive survey of British artistic production.

The museum occupies a building on Priestgate that was originally constructed in 1816 as a private house, with parts of the cellar dating back to an older sixteenth-century structure. The mansion was sold to Earl Fitzwilliam in 1856, who permitted its use as a public dispensary and infirmary, the city's first hospital, from 1857 until the War Memorial Hospital opened in 1928. Sir Percy Malcolm Stewart acquired and donated the building to the museum Society in 1931, and the art gallery was added in 1939. The Peterborough Museum Society presented the building to the city in 1968.
