Overview
Pontevedra Museum, formerly the Pontevedra Provincial Museum, is a multidisciplinary museum located in the Galician city of Pontevedra, Spain. Founded by the Provincial Deputation of Pontevedra on 30 December 1927, the institution occupies six buildings dedicated to permanent and temporary exhibitions. Its collections span painting, sculpture, archaeology, decorative arts, engraving, and ethnography, featuring both regional Galician artifacts and international pieces. The museum holds significant cultural distinctions, having been declared a Cultural Interest Property on 1 March 1962 and awarded the Gold Medal of Galicia in 1996.
Founding & history
The museum was established by the Provincial Deputation of Pontevedra on 30 December 1927, initially to support the work of the Pontevedra Archaeological Society. It opened to the public on 10 August 1929, installed in the pazo of Castro Monteagudo. Over time, acquisitions, donations, and loans expanded the collections, necessitating distribution across multiple buildings. The institution has had six directors: Casto Sampedro Folgar (1927-1937), Gerardo Alvarez Limeses (1937-1940), Xose Filgueira Valverde (1940-1986), Jose Carlos Valle Perez (1986-2018), Jose Manuel Rey Garcia (2019-2022), and Angeles Tilve Jar (2023-). In 1993, the museum received the Otero Pedrayo Prize. By 2022, it recorded 108,543 visitors in the first half of the year and nearly 175,000 by year end, making it one of the most visited museums in Galicia and the most visited in the province.
Collection scope
The museum's holdings are multidisciplinary, encompassing fine arts, archaeology, and decorative arts. The archaeological collection features significant prehistoric and protohistoric remains from Galicia, including pre-Roman and Roman goldsmithery. The fine arts holdings include romantic and historical paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, with dedicated rooms for Goya and Joaquin Sorolla, as well as Gothic, Renaissance, and Spanish still life paintings. Decorative arts and ethnography are represented through civil and religious silverware, furniture, navigation instruments, religious sculptures, traditional Galician kitchens, Sargadelos earthenware, jet objects, and engravings. The institution also houses a specialized library and a graphic archive with over 500,000 entries, including the Zagala photographic archive.
Notable holdings
Among the museum's signature works is the Gold Treasure of Caldas de Reis, a significant pre-Roman goldsmithing find. The Fernandez de la Mora y Mon silverware collection, acquired by the writer and diplomat Gonzalo Fernandez de la Mora y Mon, is a major highlight. It comprises civil and religious pieces from before 1900 originating from the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America, Russia, and China. Notable pieces include a 15th or 16th century Byzantine baptismal cup, a 1600 box belonging to New England preacher Thomas Hooker, an early 19th century Moscow snuff box with curved edges, and an imperial tureen forged in Strasbourg around 1800. A particularly valuable item is a trophy jar given by German Empress Augusta-Victoria to a race winner in 1898, featuring gold coins inlaid with the effigies of the three emperors who reigned that year. Additionally, the museum preserves the cabin of the armored frigate Numancia.
Building & site
The museum campus comprises five historic buildings and one modern structure. The Castro Monteagudo building, a 1760 pazo built by Jose de Castro y Monteagudo on Praza da Lena, served as the original site. The Garcia Florez building, an 18th century manor house at the corner of Rua Sarmiento and Rua Pasanteria, joined the museum in 1943. The oldest structure is the Ruins of St. Dominic's Convent, a 14th and 15th century Gothic church that became a national monument in 1895 and houses medieval sculptures and capitals. The Sarmiento building, a former Jesuit baroque college of Saint Bartholomew's Church, was later used as a school and cloth factory after the Jesuit expulsion in 1767. The Fernandez Lopez building, constructed between 1962 and 1965, was expanded in 2002 with a 1200 square meter annex designed by architect Celestino Garcia Brana, which won an award from the Galician Association of Architects. The modern Castelao building, begun in 2004 and inaugurated in 2013, hosts modern art and temporary exhibitions. Additionally, the city purchased the Santa Clara convent in 2021, transferring it to the Provincial Deputation in January 2023 to become the museum's seventh building following restoration.
