Portland Gallery

Portland Gallery is a commercial art gallery in central London, England, situated in the City of Westminster. Established in the mid 1980s, it is a prominent dealer specializing in modern British and contemporary paintings. The gallery holds a particular association with the Scottish Colourists and maintains an active program of exhibitions and events, supplementing its London presence with regular participation in major art fairs. It is a member of The Society of London Art Dealers.

The gallery was founded by Tom Hewlett, with sources variously placing its inception in 1984 or 1986. Under Hewlett's direction, the gallery built its specialization in modern British and contemporary art. Following Hewlett's retirement in 2022, leadership of the gallery passed to Jamie Anderson, who continues to direct the exhibition program and manage the gallery's operations and development.

The gallery's holdings focus heavily on twentieth century and contemporary Scottish paintings. Its inventory is defined by a strong concentration on the work of the four Scottish Colourists: Francis Cadell, J. D. Fergusson, George Leslie Hunter, and Samuel Peploe. Beyond these historical figures, the gallery also represents several contemporary artists, including Jack Vettriano, who regularly exhibits his work there. The gallery supports its artists and estates by presenting works from this inventory at prominent events such as the London Art Fair, the Masterpiece Fair, and the British Art Fair.

In addition to its core inventory of Scottish Colourist works by Cadell, Fergusson, Hunter, and Peploe, the gallery has staged exhibitions featuring a range of other modern and contemporary artists. Notable exhibitors have included Jeremy Gardiner, Martin Greenland, John Piper, and Tom Wood, alongside the contemporary paintings of Jack Vettriano. The gallery runs approximately fourteen exhibitions per year, rotating these artists and estates through its space.

The gallery is located at 3 Bennet Street in the St James's district of central London, positioned on the corner with St James's Street. This location places it in close proximity to the Piccadilly Circus area and near The Ritz Hotel.

Portland Gallery operates from its Bennet Street address in central London. It is open to the public from Monday to Friday between 10am and 6pm, and visits can also be arranged by appointment. The gallery continues its commercial role under the management of Jamie Anderson, maintaining its active exhibition schedule and participation in national art fairs.
