Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art

The Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art, commonly known as MAC, is a contemporary art museum located in the Santurce district of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Founded in 1984 by artists and civic sponsors, the institution has become a significant venue for modern and contemporary art from Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Housed since 2002 in the historic Rafael M. Labra Building, a restored 1916 Georgian-style structure, the museum serves as a cultural anchor in one of San Juan's most vibrant neighborhoods, promoting multidisciplinary artistic experiences and community engagement.

The museum was officially instituted as a non-profit organization on October 8, 1984, founded by artists and sponsors from civil society. Its corporate statutes establish that all its assets and collections belong to the People of Puerto Rico. In its early years, the museum operated without a permanent home, offering programs in public spaces such as Plaza Las Américas and within the offices of supporters. In 1988, the University of the Sacred Heart provided a provisional location free of charge in the Magdalena Sofía Barat building, allowing the museum to direct its resources toward institutional development for fifteen years. The museum formally petitioned the government for a permanent site, and on October 20, 2002, a contract was signed with Governor Sila Calderón granting the museum usufruct rights to the Rafael M. Labra Historic Building. The restoration of this structure, undertaken by Puerto Rican architect Otto Reyes Casanova, spanned from 1995 to 2002. In 2014, the museum launched the Proyecto Santurce as its main thirtieth anniversary commemorative initiative, engaging artists across disciplines to critically interpret the historical, economic, political, and social fabric of the Santurce neighborhood through exhibitions, commissioned projects, and live creation activities in public spaces and satellite venues.

The museum's permanent collection spans from the mid-20th century to the present, encompassing works by artists from Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Conceptually positioned at the intersection of the local and the global, and between historical and newest art, the collection aims to place works in their geopolitical context and identify stylistic correspondences across the region. The profile emphasizes the overlap and ambivalence between these spheres, creating a diverse museum experience. Pieces are acquired or donated by artists, collectors, and sponsors, with selection overseen by a committee of artists, critics, and art scholars. The museum also maintains the Documentation Center "Robi Draco Rosa," which holds documentary archives, primary sources, catalogs, files, and audiovisual materials available for research, supporting the museum's mission to promote an open perspective on contemporary art from a Puerto Rican viewpoint.

The museum occupies the Rafael M. Labra Building, located at the corner of Avenida Ponce de León and Avenida Roberto H. Todd in Santurce. Constructed in 1916 as part of the Paul G. Miller Commission project for building public schools in urban zones, the building was designed by architect Adrian C. Finlayson. The Georgian-style architecture, characteristic of 18th-century England, was part of a group of monumental school structures built under the commission. The building belonged to the Puerto Rico Department of Public Education from its construction. It was listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places in 1987 as the Rafael M. Labra High School, and added to the Puerto Rico Register of Historic Sites and Zones in 2000. The restoration by Otto Reyes Casanova was a delicate and complex project requiring meticulous research and exhaustive labor to recover the structure from deterioration and restore many of its original elements. The museum is situated approximately ten minutes walking distance from La Placita de Santurce.
