Rheinisches Malermuseum

The Rheinisches Malermuseum is a specialized art museum in Bonn, Germany, dedicated to preserving and displaying forgotten techniques, tools, and equipment of the painter's craft. Established through a private association and opened in 1989, it occupies a distinctive position among German museums for its focus on the material culture and workshop practices of master painters around 1900, combined with the documentary history of regional painters' and decorators' guilds in the Rhineland.

Initial plans for a museum devoted to the painter's trade emerged in 1979, but concrete development only became possible with the founding of the Förderverein Rheinisches Malermuseum Bonn e.V. in 1985. Retired master painters played a central role in shaping the institution, contributing their expertise to the conception, construction, and maintenance of the exhibition through their membership in the supporting association. After several years of preparation, the museum was formally opened on November 10, 1989.

The collection derives its core holdings from the estate of a Bonn master painter. Its central focus is a faithful reconstruction of a painter's workshop circa 1900, presenting the complete array of tools and materials employed at that time. The exhibition demonstrates various techniques of the painter's craft through sample designs for murals, ceilings, and facade decoration. A significant portion of the museum is also devoted to the history of the Bonn Guild of Painters and Decorators, documented through flags, certificates, and invoices from the formerly independent guilds of Bonn, Bad Godesberg, and the Rhein-Sieg district, illustrating the self-assurance of the painters' and decorators' trade in the Rhineland during the guild period.

The centerpiece of the guild history section is the original silver guild cup from 1896, which serves as the showpiece of this exhibition area. The reconstructed workshop itself, with its paint mills, brushes, pigments, and other period equipment, constitutes the museum's most distinctive holding, offering a rare material record of artisanal practice at the turn of the twentieth century.

The museum is located at Berliner Platz 35-39, situated in the old painters' hall on the second floor of a former vocational school. The building's painted exterior facade, dating from the Wilhelminian period, functions as a visible landmark and advertisement for the museum. The separate building on the site now houses the gymnasium of the former Pestalozzi School, a former open all-day special school that has since closed, and currently serves as a training venue for athletes of the Bonn Boxing Club.

The Rheinisches Malermuseum is privately owned and operated by the Förderverein Rheinisches Malermuseum Bonn e.V. Its location in the old painters' hall of a former vocational school at Berliner Platz 35-39 places it within an educational and athletic complex that reflects the adaptive reuse of institutional buildings in Bonn. The museum continues to fulfill its founding mission of preserving nearly forgotten painterly techniques and equipment for future generations, maintained through the ongoing involvement of its supporting association.
