Ruffenhofen Roman Park

Ruffenhofen Roman Park (German: Römerpark Ruffenhofen) is an archaeological park in the Hesselberg region of southern Ansbach District, Bavaria, Germany. Covering approximately 40 hectares, it preserves the underground remains of the Roman fort of Ruffenhofen Castle and large portions of its associated civilian settlement, which have survived without later construction. The park lies within the municipalities of Gerolfingen, Weiltingen, and Wittelshofen, about 2.2 km from the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes. As a component of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes, the site holds significant archaeological and cultural importance.

The park's origins trace to 2001, when the three host municipalities founded the Ruffenhofen Roman Fort Special Purpose Association (Zweckverband Römerkastell Ruffenhofen) to develop tourism, market the site, ensure long-term protection, and support scientific research. Between 2002 and 2003, the Office for Rural Development Ansbach purchased former agricultural lands under which the fort and parts of the vicus lay, removing them from cultivation. The official handover to the association and the park's founding occurred on 1 August 2003. Matthias Pausch was hired as archaeologist on 1 April 2004, and a supporting non-profit association, Förderverein Römerpark Ruffenhofen e. V., was established in 2006. In 2015, the Zweckverband received the Bavarian Monument Conservation Medal. A major construction phase began on 21 April 2008, completing the viewing hill with native shrubs and a 700-square-meter scale model of the fort at 1:10. Since July 2022, a memorial stone honors the late Bavarian State Conservator C. Sebastian Sommer.

The park's holdings consist primarily of subsurface archaeological remains rather than portable collections. The 40-hectare core preserves the Roman fort and extensive elements of its civilian settlement, or vicus, entirely unbuilt and underground. Research has advanced through multiple methods: small excavations by Wilhelm Kohl, Reichs-Limeskommission section commissioner, in the late 19th century; aerial archaeology revealing structural details of the castellum and vicus; and geophysical prospection by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Conservation, which produced a complete plan of the installation. In 2005, the association conducted new excavations in the fort wall area. The park also features casts of Roman stone monuments and, since 2020, a Roman-style garden with the rear facade of a Roman strip-house, built in cooperation with the Jugendbauhütte Regensburg and first presented at the 2019 State Garden Show in Wassertrüdingen.

The most prominent interpretive feature is the approximately 700-square-meter 1:10 scale model of the fort, inaugurated in 2008, which visualizes the probable appearance of the Roman installation. The Roman garden, introduced in 2020, offers a reconstructed strip-house facade and period-appropriate cultivation representing vicus domestic life. The park also contains a labyrinth, playground, and numerous information panels with illustrations. Since 2012, the Limeseum museum has complemented the open-air site with exhibition facilities.

The archaeological park occupies a rural landscape across three municipalities. Its design emphasizes non-invasive presentation of buried remains. Hedges, mown patterns, and pathways make the fort's dimensions experiential without excavation. A viewing hill provides an overview of the entire complex. The site is a protected monument under the Bavarian Monument Conservation Act and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes.
