Sakıp Sabancı Museum

The Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum is a private fine arts museum in the Sarıyer district of Istanbul, Turkey. Founded by industrialist and philanthropist Sakıp Sabancı, it opened in June 2002 and is dedicated to calligraphic art, religious and state documents, and paintings of the Ottoman era. The museum has gained international recognition through major temporary exhibitions of modern masters and serves as a significant cultural institution on the Bosphorus.

The museum was established by Sakıp Sabancı and opened to the public in June 2002. Its origins, however, trace back to collecting activities that began decades earlier. Hacı Ömer Sabancı, Sakıp Sabancı's father and founder of Sabancı Holding, began acquiring decorative art works including figurines, metalwork, porcelain, objets d'art, and furniture in 1940. Sakıp Sabancı expanded this collection from 1970 onward. In 1998, the family mansion was leased for 49 years to Sabancı University together with its antique furnishings and art collections, creating the foundation for the museum. Since opening, the institution has pursued an active exhibition policy, hosting national and foreign temporary exhibitions and cultural events on weekends. In 2013, the museum launched digitalSSM, an ambitious digital archive project that made approximately 77,000 high-resolution images of collection items freely available online, marking the first digitized collection of a museum in Turkey.

The museum's holdings span multiple media and centuries, reflecting both Ottoman artistic traditions and European decorative arts. The calligraphy collection comprises nearly 400 pieces covering 500 years of Ottoman calligraphic art, including manuscript Korans, prayer books, calligraphic panels, decrees, imperial documents, declarations, imperial seals, poetry books, and calligraphic tools. The painting collection features more than 320 selected works from the Ottoman and Republican eras by notable Ottoman and Turkish artists including Osman Hamdi Bey, İbrahim Çallı, Halil Paşa, Nazmi Ziya Güran, Şeker Ahmet Paşa, and Fikret Mualla, as well as European artists such as Fausto Zonaro and Ivan Ayvazovsky who lived and worked in the Ottoman Empire. The decorative arts holdings include 18th and 19th century Chinese porcelain in Famille noire and Famille verte, polychrome vases, and decorated plates, alongside 19th century French porcelain including Sèvres vases and German porcelain from Berlin and Vienna. The museum also preserves personal items, photographs with statespersons, decorations, and medals belonging to Sakıp Sabancı.

Among the museum's signature works, the bronze equestrian statue at the entrance gate holds particular prominence. Designed by Louis-Joseph Daumas in Paris in 1864 and cast by Vor Thiebaut, this sculpture was purchased by Hacı Ömer Sabancı at auction and gave the mansion its popular name, Atlı Köşk (Equestrian Villa). The calligraphy collection stands as one of the most comprehensive assemblies of Ottoman calligraphic art, with nearly 400 works spanning five centuries. The painting collection's strength lies in its depth of Ottoman and early Republican Turkish art, augmented by works of European artists who worked within the empire. The museum has also achieved worldwide attention through temporary exhibitions of major international artists.

The Sakıp Sabancı Museum is located in the Sarıyer district of Istanbul Province, Turkey, on the European shore of the Bosphorus. As a private institution under the umbrella of Sabancı University, it continues to serve as a public museum with permanent and temporary exhibitions.
