Suruma Museum

The Suruma Museum is an archaeological museum located in the Department of Putumayo in southwestern Colombia. Established in 2021, it holds the distinction of being the first archaeological museum in the Colombian Amazon region. The institution is dedicated to exhibiting the archaeological findings of the department, serving as an educational space to preserve historical artifacts and narrate the history and culture of Putumayo. Beyond its permanent displays, the museum was designed to function as a travelling exhibition, allowing broader audiences to explore and celebrate the cultural diversity of the region.

The museum opened in November 2021 through a partnership between Gran Tierra Energy, Corpoamazonia, and the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History (ICANH). Its creation was rooted in archaeological activities conducted by Gran Tierra Energy, which recovered the artifacts now housed in the institution. The excavation process lasted more than four months, covering an area of over 3,300 square meters. A team of 25 archaeologists and 160 local field assistants carried out the work. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the mayors of Mocoa, Santiago, and Villagarzón, as well as Nicolás Loaiza, the director of ICANH.

The collection focuses on the archaeological heritage of Putumayo, with objects originating from Puerto Asís and the Alto Putumayo region, also known as the Sibundoy Valley. The excavations have recovered more than 20 tons of archaeological materials to date. The recorded inventory encompasses ceramic fragments, complete pottery pieces, lithic artifacts including two carved projectile points, archaeological features such as coal and fire pits, and goldsmith pieces. These holdings are distributed across 15 permanent exhibits, which are arranged in two structures and a central area showcasing a reconstruction of an archaeological excavation site.

While the museum displays a wide array of indigenous ceramics, lithic artifacts, and goldsmith pieces, its traveling exhibitions have extended its reach significantly. The temporary exhibit People of Putumayo Narrate: Journeys, Exchanges, and Claims has traveled across Colombia, including stops at the National Museum of Colombia in Bogota and the San Agustín Archaeological Park in the department of Huila. Additionally, ICANH created a replica of the museum featuring seven different displays. This replica was shown at the Jorge Garcés Borrero Departmental Library in Cali, reaching visitors from over 190 countries, and was featured at the United Nations Biodiversity Conference of the Parties (COP 16) in 2024 with support from Colombia's Ministry of Culture.

The museum is situated within the Amazon Experimental Center (Centro Experimental Amazonico, abbreviated as CEA) near Mocoa, Putumayo. The CEA itself was founded in 1986 by the Putumayo Autonomous Corporation. The museum complex consists of two structures housing the permanent exhibits and a central area dedicated to the reconstruction of an archaeological excavation site, providing visitors with an educational layout that contextualizes the artifacts within their discovery settings.
