Tashkeel Dubai

Tashkeel is an art and design facility in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, founded in 2008 by Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum. Operating on an open membership model, it functions as a multidisciplinary studio, gallery, and forum for the UAE's creative community. The name derives from the Arabic word for vocalization or the addition of diacritical marks in Arabic script, which in a broader sense means 'to form' or 'to give shape'. Tashkeel's mission centers on supporting the act of artistic creation itself rather than merely the consumption of art, providing practitioners with the tools, space, and expertise to develop contemporary art and design practice rooted in the UAE context.

Tashkeel was established in January 2008 by Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum, an artist who later represented the UAE at the Venice Biennale in 2011. Working with her former art professor Jill Hoyle, Sheikha Lateefa sought to address a gap she had experienced after graduation by creating a space where local artists and designers could launch their creative careers. The organization was progressive from its inception in its inclusive membership policy, open to all nationalities, genders, and educational backgrounds. In its early days, Tashkeel was referred to as a studio, with state-of-the-art facilities that were constantly updated. To mark its ten-year anniversary, Tashkeel published a book entitled 'Reference Point: A History of Tashkeel and the UAE Art Scene'.

Tashkeel does not function as a traditional collecting institution but rather as a production and presentation platform. Its scope encompasses contemporary art and design across multiple disciplines, with particular strengths in supporting emerging and established practitioners through facilities for fine art, digital work, 3D fabrication, darkroom photography, printmaking, textile printing, and jewellerymaking. The organization's programming emphasizes practitioner development, public engagement, lifelong learning, and the growth of the creative and cultural industries. Its annual exhibition programme includes open calls, residency outcomes, culminating shows for its training programmes, and 'Made in Tashkeel' (2009, present), an annual exhibition presenting selected works by members, workshop participants, and recent exhibiting artists.

Rather than maintaining a permanent collection, Tashkeel's notable 'holdings' consist of its programmes and the work produced through them. The Tanween design programme, initiated in 2013 under the name Design Road Pro, takes selected cohorts of emerging UAE-based designers through nine-month development cycles to create products inspired by the UAE's surroundings, exhibited at Dubai Design Week. Alumni who have become established names include Abdulla Al Mulla, Aljoud Lootah, Zeinab Al-Hashemi, Latifa Saeed, Khalid Shafar, Salem Al-Mansoori, and others. The Critical Practice Programme offers year-long research and discourse-led development culminating in major solo presentations. The Van Cleef & Arpels Middle East Emergent Designer Prize, in collaboration with Tashkeel, nurtures emerging GCC talent with winners including Salem Al Mansoori, Vikram Divecha, Ivan Parati, Ranim Orouk, and Hamza Omari.

Tashkeel operates across two locations in Dubai. Its main facility is a 2,800 square meter building constructed in 1987 in the district of Nad Al Sheba, situated not far from Dubai's business district but surrounded by desert, horse tracks, and camel farms. This building houses a gallery, discipline-specific studios, a library, lounge, garden, and workspaces. Since 2011, Tashkeel has also maintained individual studios in a traditional house in the historical neighborhood of Al Fahidi in Bur Dubai, which contains five individual artist studios and two gallery spaces. The Nad Al Sheba studios have a more communal character, while the Al Fahidi location offers more private working environments.

Tashkeel is located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with its primary facility in Nad Al Sheba and additional studios in the Al Fahidi historical neighborhood. The organization is owned and operated under the founding direction of Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum. It continues to serve as a community hub for the UAE's creative industries, offering year-round workshops and courses for all abilities and ages, including theoretical courses such as Critical Dialogues and intensive annual courses on Arabic type design and typography. Tashkeel also delivers bespoke services for public and private sectors under the banner 'Creative Solutions for Inspired Spaces'. Its present role emphasizes enriching the UAE's cultural scene through studios, exhibitions, workshops, programmes, residencies, and educational outreach, with community-based activities that encourage experimentation, growth, and collaboration at its core.
