The Beatles Story

The Beatles Story is a museum in Liverpool, England, devoted to the history of the Beatles. Located on the historic Royal Albert Dock, it officially opened on 1 May 1990 and is owned by Mersey Ferries, part of Merseytravel. The museum was recognised as one of the best tourist attractions in the United Kingdom in 2015, and in its first twenty-five years it reportedly drew four million visitors from more than one hundred countries.

The museum was devised and created by Mike and Bernadette Byrne. Its establishment followed earlier Liverpool exhibitions dedicated to the band: the Cavern Mecca (1981-1984) and Beatles City (1984-1986). The Beatles Story represented a more permanent and ambitious institutional effort to preserve and present Beatles heritage in the band's home city. Since its 1990 opening, it has operated continuously at its Albert Dock location, building an international audience over subsequent decades.

The museum's holdings span personal memorabilia, musical instruments, documents, and audio-visual materials that trace the Beatles' career and cultural impact. Exhibits cover the British Invasion and the solo careers of each Beatle. The collection includes original objects alongside recreated environments, offering visitors immersive historical contexts rather than a purely object-based display.

Signature exhibits include recreations of The Casbah Coffee Club, The Cavern Club, and Abbey Road Studios. Among original artefacts are John Lennon's spectacles, George Harrison's first guitar, and the last piano Lennon played before his death, a honky-tonk instrument distinct from the one on which he composed Imagine. The museum also holds an unsent letter from Lennon to Queen Elizabeth II, in which he announced his intention to return a medal in protest against British involvement in the Biafran war and support for the Vietnam War. Other items include a reconstructed yellow submarine, numerous original musical instruments, records, photographs, and posters, alongside original music recordings and television footage.

The museum occupies a site within the renovated Albert Dock harbour area on Liverpool's waterfront. The Royal Albert Dock is a historic dock complex, and the museum's placement there connects the Beatles' story to the maritime and commercial heritage of their native city.
