Overview

The Theatre Museum in the Court Theatre is a museum dedicated to Danish theatre history from the 18th century to the present. It is situated at Christiansborg Palace on Slotsholmen in Copenhagen Municipality, Denmark. Located on the first floor of the building above the Royal Stables, the institution occupies the historic Court Theatre, which functions both as a primary exhibition space and as a venue for public events and broadcasts.

Founding & history

The museum was founded in 1912 by a private group of theatre enthusiasts. Under the leadership of Robert Neiiendam, who served as its head, the institution was moved into the old Court Theatre in 1922. Prior to this relocation, the theatre space had been closed to the public since 1881, when it was shuttered due to new fire regulations and most of its original furnishings were sold off. The room had even served as a furniture warehouse for a period, with earlier plans to convert it into a speech stage abandoned due to fire safety concerns.

Notable holdings

The Court Theatre itself serves as the most significant artifact in the museum. The public has free access to walk around the theatre building, making the historic auditorium an integral part of the exhibition. The space continues to host various events such as readings, lectures, concerts, and small guest performances. Additionally, the auditorium functions as a broadcasting studio, hosting live television programs such as Det Nye Talkshow, med Anders Lund Madsen.
