Valletta Contemporary

Valletta Contemporary is an independent non-profit exhibition space and art gallery in Valletta, Malta, that opened to the public in April 2018. Founded by artist, architect, and collector Norbert Francis Attard, it is operated by the Norbert Francis Attard Foundation (formerly META Foundation). The gallery occupies a renovated historic warehouse on East Street, near St. Barbara Bastions and the Lower Barrakka Gardens, and has become a significant platform for bringing international contemporary art to Malta while also supporting local artists. It is affiliated with the contemporary art platform Ocula.

Norbert Francis Attard founded Valletta Contemporary with the aim of giving back to Malta's artistic community by offering an independent platform for experiencing contemporary art from both local and international sources. The exhibition space was created from three adjoining converted warehouses, a renovation project that took approximately ten years to complete. The gallery opened in April 2018 in a 400-year-old former warehouse. Since its founding, Attard has overseen operations and curated exhibitions drawn from his decades of collecting. The institution also runs an artist-in-residence programme, Gozo Contemporary, which has contributed works to the Foundation's holdings through artist donations. In 2019, the gallery hosted the MET(a) Gala, a fundraising event combining contemporary art and fashion, and participated in the MICAS International Art Weekend with talks featuring speakers such as Sir Norman Foster. The gallery paused briefly in 2024 before reopening with major exhibitions.

Valletta Contemporary does not maintain a permanent public collection in the traditional museum sense; rather, it operates through a dynamic temporary exhibition programme that runs throughout the year. However, the Foundation and Attard himself have assembled a substantial private collection of international contemporary art over several decades of travel to art fairs and artists' studios. This collection, which Attard has described as addressing a gap in Malta for publicly accessible international contemporary art, encompasses diverse media and styles reflecting varied interests. Works have been acquired from art fairs abroad, directly from artists, and through gifts from artists who have participated in the Foundation's programmes. The collection includes both established and emerging artists, with Attard emphasizing quality over name recognition. The gallery has begun opening this collection to the public through periodic exhibitions, with plans for annual shows dedicated to the collection beginning in the mid-2020s.

The Norbert Francis Attard Foundation's collection includes works by prominent international artists. In 2019, works by Liam Gillick, Damien Hirst, and Brian Eno featured in a show titled Post-Minimalism. The 2024 exhibition Cumulus brought together 29 internationally renowned artists, including Gilbert and George, Ai Weiwei, Tracey Emin, Alicja Kwade, and Ilya Kabakov. Earlier, the 2020 exhibition Up to Now had featured Damien Hirst, Brian Eno, Hans Kotter, and Eberhard Bosslet. The gallery also presented a smaller exhibition dedicated to the 20th-century Hungarian-French artist Victor Vasarely. Through the VC Editions programme, the gallery commissions artworks from selected artists, both Maltese and international, whose work has previously been exhibited there, making these pieces available through the gallery.

Valletta Contemporary is housed at 15, 16, and 17 Triq Lvant (East Street) in Valletta. The gallery occupies a 400-year-old former warehouse, one of three adjoining converted warehouses that together form the exhibition space. The renovation project preserved the building's original aesthetic character while creating modern exhibition spaces, blending historic architecture with contemporary presentation needs.
