Vitromusée Romont

The Vitromusée Romont is a museum of stained glass and glass art located in the Château de Romont in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. Founded in 1981 as the Swiss Museum of Stained Glass, it was renamed Vitromusée in 2006 during major renovations and expansion. The museum occupies a medieval hilltop fortress in the town of Romont, whose name derives from the French for "round hill," and stands in the upper Glâne Valley. Together with its scientific partner, the Vitrocentre, it forms a significant center for the study, preservation, and presentation of glass art from the medieval period to the present day. Both the museum and its host castle are listed as Swiss cultural assets of national importance.

The museum was founded in 1981 as the Musée suisse du vitrail in Romont, canton of Fribourg. For its first twenty-five years, annual attendance remained relatively stable, fluctuating between 15,000 and 18,000 visitors. A pivotal moment came in October 2006, when the museum reopened after extensive renovations and an extension within the Château de Romont. On this occasion, it adopted the name Vitromusée and was inscribed as a Swiss cultural asset of national importance, a status also granted to the castle itself. The museum has since mounted notable temporary exhibitions that have drawn significant audiences. From July to November 2007, it welcomed 25,000 visitors to its exhibition "Chagall - Le vitrail. The Color of Love." In 2014, from June to November, it exhibited Marc Chagall's "Bouquet de Chagall." Since 2007, the museum has also organized the Vitrofestival, a biennial glass art event that attracted nearly 5,000 spectators in 2015. The scientific arm of the institution, the Vitrocentre, was founded in 1988 as the Centre suisse de recherche sur le vitrail (Swiss Center for Stained Glass Research).

The Vitromusée presents works of stained glass spanning from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its galleries are devoted to both historical and contemporary glass art, with one wing specifically dedicated to reverse glass painting (Hinterglasmalerei). Through changing exhibitions, the museum juxtaposes historical works with creations by contemporary artists, offering a comprehensive view of the evolution of glass as an artistic medium. The collection extends beyond stained glass windows to include glass art objects such as paintings, furniture, and jewellery, reflecting the diverse applications of glass in decorative and fine arts.

The museum's exhibitions have featured works of considerable artistic significance. In 2007, it presented "Chagall - Le vitrail. The Color of Love," an exhibition that drew 25,000 visitors over four months. In 2014, the Vitromusée exhibited Marc Chagall's "Bouquet de Chagall" from June through November. The permanent and rotating displays encompass medieval stained glass alongside contemporary pieces, with the reverse glass painting collection representing a specialized area of the holdings.

The museum is housed in the Château de Romont, a medieval fortress originally developed as a strategic military base by Peter II of Savoy. The castle occupies the highest point in the town, commanding views of the upper Glâne Valley. Large sections of the medieval fortifications remain intact, including the Tour à Boyer. The complex includes a courtyard and well-preserved defensive structures that provide a historic setting for the display of glass art. The site's elevated position on its namesake round hill has defined its strategic and cultural significance for centuries.
