Vladem Contemporary

Vladem Contemporary is the newest branch of the New Mexico Museum of Art, located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Opened in September 2023 in the city's Railyard Arts District, this 35,006-square-foot satellite facility was created to address the growing need for contemporary art exhibition space and to fulfill the museum's founding mission of supporting living artists. Named for philanthropists Robert and Ellen Vladem, whose $4 million lead gift made the project possible, the venue represents a significant expansion of the state-run museum's capacity to engage with 21st-century art forms including digital media, installation, and performance works that the original 1917 Pueblo Revival building could not accommodate.

The New Mexico Museum of Art was established in 1917 under director Edgar Lee Hewett, who envisioned an egalitarian exhibition space where artists could display work without academic juries. By 2013, the museum's expanding contemporary collection and the technical limitations of the historic Plaza building prompted plans for a second location. The Museum of New Mexico Foundation launched a $12.5 million Centennial Campaign in 2016, with the state and Foundation each contributing approximately $10 to $11 million toward construction. The state additionally allocated $1 million in annual operating funds. Construction began in 2021 after an archaeological survey by the Office of Archaeological Studies. A significant challenge emerged regarding the 1980 Multicultural mural by Gilberto Guzmán and collaborators on the building's exterior, which had been repainted in 1993 and was deemed too degraded to restore. After negotiations, Guzmán agreed to recreate the work on panels for the lobby. Vladem Contemporary opened on September 23, 2023, with inaugural programming that drew record attendance.

Vladem Contemporary houses and displays the New Mexico Museum of Art's contemporary collections, with particular strength in works from 1970 to 2000, a pivotal period in the region's art history. The museum's overall collection encompasses over 20,000 works including paintings, photographs, sculptures, prints, drawings, and mixed-media pieces. The contemporary holdings emphasize artists connected to New Mexico, including figures associated with Land Art, Light and Space, and other postwar movements. The inaugural exhibition Shadow and Light, curated by Merry Scully and the museum's curatorial team, explored spiritual, psychological, and cosmic responses to Southwestern light and landscape through diverse media. This was followed by Off-Center: New Mexico Art, 1970-2000, a multiphase survey organized around themes of Place, Spectacle, and Identity, with rotating presentations including the Body Electric installation. The museum actively acquires contemporary work, adding 50 new pieces during its first fiscal year.

The inaugural Shadow and Light exhibition featured significant works by artists with deep New Mexico connections. Nancy Holt's Mirrors of Light II (1974), composed of ten circular mirrors and a quartz light, explored the ephemeral nature of light and celestial phenomena. Agnes Martin, Judy Chicago, Larry Bell, and Bruce Nauman anchored displays, alongside Helen Pashgian, Ron Cooper, and Florence Miller Pierce. Charles Ross's Three-Part Serial Cube Set and Leo Villareal's LED installation Astral Array (2023), permanently installed in the breezeway, were highlighted. Susan York's commission Cu:C (2023) juxtaposed copper and graphite slabs in the golden ratio. Virgil Ortiz presented massive ceramic sculptures reimagining the 1680 Pueblo Revolt through science fiction. The Body Electric phase of Off-Center included Roxanne Swentzell's ceramic nude, Kriegstein's triptych A Kinder Gentler Nation (1991), Marie Romero Cash's Bad Girls of the Bible Wheel (2001), and Basia Irland's Río Grande Repository, Source to Sea (1999). An augmented reality piece based on Judy Chicago's Kitty City series was created for the lobby.

Vladem Contemporary occupies the repurposed 1936 Charles Ilfeld Company warehouse, later the Joseph F. Halpin Records Building, at 404 Montezuma Avenue in the Railyard Arts District. The original 20,000-square-foot brick and steel warehouse was expanded to 35,000 square feet through adaptive reuse by architects DNCA and StudioGP, led by Devendra Contractor, Deirdre Harris, and Graham Hogan. The design preserves the original territorial-style brick warehouse while adding a second floor and connecting old and new elements with a glass opening. The building contains 7,000 square feet of exhibition galleries, 6,400 square feet of collections care and storage including viewable storage, a 2,300-square-foot Van Mabee Education Center, the Dee Ann McIntyre in Memory of Scotty McIntyre Studio for artist residencies, and two second-floor patios. Monumental windows frame views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and city, integrating the landscape into the gallery experience. Entry is from Montezuma Avenue or the train depot, connected by a central lobby and breezeway.

Vladem Contemporary is located at 404 Montezuma Avenue in Santa Fe's Railyard Arts District, near the Santa Fe Railyard train depot and adjacent to SITE Santa Fe and commercial galleries. The museum is governed by the state of New Mexico as part of the Museum of New Mexico and operated in conjunction with the original New Mexico Museum of Art one block from the Santa Fe Plaza. The lobby and certain installations are open free to the public, including the street-facing Fritz Family Digital Window and Window Box Project for emerging artists. The Rail Runner Express train stop connects the site to Albuquerque. During its inaugural fiscal year (2023-24), Vladem Contemporary attracted 14,526 program guests and contributed to a combined 79,491 visitors across both museum locations. Educational initiatives reached 4,573 youth, including 2,871 school group tours and the Railyard Compass Program for seventh-graders in collaboration with SITE Santa Fe and Violet Crown Cinema. Final Friday Artist Talks and artist residencies further engage the community.
