WAM Museum of Contemporary Art

The Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art, known as WAM, is a museum of modern and contemporary art in central Turku, Finland. Situated on the east bank of the Aura River in the city's III District, it opened in 1967 as a purpose-built institution dedicated to the work of Finnish sculptor Wäinö Aaltonen and to broader modern art. Today it functions as a public museum whose permanent exhibition draws on the City of Turku art collection, while its temporary exhibitions present Finnish and international contemporary art.

The museum originated in a March 1964 decision by the Turku City Council to establish a museum devoted to Wäinö Aaltonen. That same year Aaltonen signed an agreement donating a foundational collection to the proposed institution. Construction began in October 1965, and the museum was officially opened on 17 September 1967. From its inception, the project was a family affair: the modernist building was designed by Aaltonen's son Matti Aaltonen and daughter-in-law Irma Aaltonen, with Wäinö Aaltonen himself taking an active role in planning. The museum has since operated as part of the city's cultural infrastructure, supplementing its original holdings with annual acquisitions.

The permanent exhibition rests on the City of Turku art collection, whose strengths lie in three areas: the art of the Turku region, three-dimensional art, and the work of Wäinö Aaltonen. The collection grows through an annual acquisition grant; since the start of the 21st century, roughly sixty new works have been purchased each year. Purchases are made from exhibitions, directly from artists, and occasionally from private collectors, while investment funds are sometimes used to commission works from artists or artist groups. Decisions on acquisitions and donations are made by the Museum Director and the collection curator, subject to approval by the Cultural Board. The museum also holds Aaltonen's personal archive and library.

The core holdings comprise a large collection of works by Wäinö Aaltonen, including sculptures from his Travail et avenir series displayed on the terrace in front of the museum. Among the most prominent individual pieces is a four-metre-high personification of the Finnish Maiden (Suomi-neito), which stands before the museum entrance. The personal archive and library donated by Aaltonen to the city form part of the permanent holdings.

The museum building is a modernist structure on the east bank of the Aura River, adjacent to the government administrative building. Matti and Irma Aaltonen's architectural drawings produced a clean, well-lit interior with wide windows and numerous skylights, designed to meet contemporary exhibition requirements. Wäinö Aaltonen specifically requested that the exhibition spaces remain as open as possible to permit viewing of spatial work from all sides. The interior also contains a cafeteria and a shop.
