Jacques-Joseph de Gault (1738 to after 1812) was a French miniaturist celebrated for grisaille work that imitated carved cameos and bas-reliefs. He trained as a porcelain painter at the Sevres manufactory around 1760, where he developed the trompe-l'oeil technique of rendering classical reliefs in monochrome. He was received into the Academie de Saint-Luc in Paris in 1774 and exhibited there into the 1780s.
De Gault applied his cameo style to the decoration of snuffboxes and other luxury objects, often treating mythological and allegorical subjects, and he also painted portrait miniatures.
