Artist
Yan Ciyu

Yan Ciyu is a Song dynasty landscape artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Yan Ciyu was a Chinese painter of the Southern Song dynasty, active around 1164 to 1181. He specialised in landscape, the most esteemed genre of the period, working in the intimate small formats such as fans and album leaves that flourished at the Southern Song court. His paintings blend the precise, sharply drawn rocks and gnarled trees of the Northern Song manner with the softer, mist-laden atmosphere characteristic of Southern Song landscape, evoking secluded and contemplative scenes of nature.
Works attributed to him are held in major collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington.
