Henri and Charles Beaubrun

Henri Beaubrun (1603-1677) and Charles Beaubrun (1604-1692) were French portrait painters and cousins who worked in such close collaboration that their individual hands are often difficult to distinguish. Active in Paris, they became leading court portraitists during the reign of Louis XIV, painting Anne of Austria, Queen Marie-Therese, and other members of the royal family and aristocracy. Both were among the founding members of the Academie royale de peinture et de sculpture, established in 1648. Their refined, formal portraits, particularly of women, exemplify the conventions of seventeenth-century French court painting.
