American

Samuel V. Homan is an American Romanticism painter. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Samuel V. Homan was an American painter active in the first half of the nineteenth century and associated with North Carolina. He worked in the tradition of itinerant portrait painting, producing likenesses for families in the American South. His best-known work, Portrait of a Boy, is a small portrait now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, signed with his initials.

Little is documented about his life or training, and he is representative of the many regional portraitists who supplied a steady demand for family likenesses in early nineteenth-century America.
