Children & Youth
Children entered painting slowly, first as small adults at the edge of religious scenes, then as subjects worth a canvas of their own. By the eighteenth century the portrait of a child at play, with a hoop or a pet, had become a tender genre of its own, and a record of how each age imagined childhood.
