Zhou Dongqing was a Chinese painter active in the late thirteenth century, during the early Yuan dynasty. A native of Linjiang in Jiangxi province, he was a friend of the Song loyalist Wen Tianxiang (1236 to 1283) and lived near the Daoist centre at Mount Longhu, an environment reflected in his work. He is known above all for the handscroll The Pleasures of Fishes, dated 1291 and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Painted in ink and colour on paper, it draws on a passage from the Daoist classic Zhuangzi, using muted washes and flat patterns to convey a mood of detachment.
