Ambrose Andrews (1801-1877) was an American itinerant painter of portraits, miniatures, and landscapes. Born in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, he took up painting as a young man and studied at the American Academy of Fine Arts in New York. His career carried him across many regions, including New York, Connecticut, Texas, and Louisiana.
He is best known for The Children of Nathan Starr, a memorial group portrait showing the family's children at play in their Middletown, Connecticut home. Andrews exhibited at venues including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design, working in the descriptive style typical of antebellum American portraiture.
