Workshop of Paolo Veneziano

Workshop of Paolo Veneziano is a Byzantine icon painting artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Art Institute of Chicago.

Paolo Veneziano’s workshop made altar panels in the 1300s, painting saints in gold-backed scenes with jewel-bright colors. One panel shows Saints John the Baptist and Catherine of Alexandria side by side, their halos glowing like coins, their robes stiff with pattern. If the gold leaf catches your eye, tap into the little red robe on Catherine’s right arm, it’s the only patch of color in the whole piece.
