Giovanni di Tano Fei
Republic of Florence
Giovanni di Tano Fei is a Republic of Florence Byzantine icon painting painter. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Giovanni di Tano Fei was a Florentine painter documented as active between about 1384 and 1405. He worked in the late Gothic manner that prevailed in Florence around 1400, producing religious panels and altarpieces with gilded grounds and devotional subjects. His signed Coronation of the Virgin with saints, dated 1394 and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is among his securely identified works, and a Crucifixion is held by the Joslyn Art Museum.
His painting reflects the decorative, linear traditions of Trecento Tuscany as they continued into the early fifteenth century.
