Nectarius Kulyuksin

Nectarius Kulyuksin is a Russian Icon artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Hermitage Museum.

Russian icon painters kept sacred scenes alive in layered tempera and gold leaf. Nectarius Kulyuksin’s 1679 distemper “St John the Divine in Silence” wraps the apostle in deep crimson and gilt halos, silencing all but the brush’s quiet rhythm. The rigid folds of John’s robe and the hovering angel show how centuries-old patterns still breathed in the 17th century. Tap the image to zoom into every gilt thread and shadowed fold.
