The Master of the Legend of Saint Barbara is the conventional name given to an anonymous Early Netherlandish painter active in Brussels in the late fifteenth century, roughly from 1470 to 1500. The designation, coined by the art historian Max J. Friedländer, derives from a series of panels illustrating the legend of Saint Barbara. The painter worked in the tradition of Rogier van der Weyden, favouring decorative narrative scenes with clear figures and bright colour.
Some scholars have proposed identifying him with the documented Brussels painter Aert van den Bossche, though the equation remains debated. Panels associated with the master are held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other collections.
