Portrait of After Zhou Fang

After Zhou Fang is a Tang dynasty painting artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The designation "After Zhou Fang" indicates a work produced in the manner of, or copied from, the Tang dynasty painter Zhou Fang rather than by his own hand. Zhou Fang was active in the late eighth and early ninth centuries and came from Chang'an, the Tang capital. He was celebrated for refined figure paintings, especially images of aristocratic court ladies rendered with full forms and delicate color, as well as Buddhist subjects.

Later artists frequently copied his compositions, and many surviving paintings carry his name as a traditional attribution rather than a documented original.
