The label "After Li Cheng" marks a work produced in the style of, or as a copy after, the Chinese landscape master Li Cheng (919-967), rather than an original by him. Li Cheng worked in the late Five Dynasties and early Northern Song period and became one of the most influential landscape painters in Chinese history. He is known for atmospheric winter scenes, level-distance compositions, and gnarled trees rendered with the so-called crab-claw branches.
Genuine works grew scarce within a century of his death, and the critic Mi Fu doubted that many survived, so countless later paintings carry his name as imitations or homages.
