Monogrammist IM, an unknown painter of the late 1400s, made small, detailed tempera panels of religious scenes. The Crucifixion (1480) crowds a hillside under a dark sky, with Christ on the cross among mourners in sharp, crinkled robes. The faces are stiff but full of grief in a cold, flat light.
