Antonio da Firenze

Antonio da Firenze is an Early Renaissance painter. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Hermitage Museum, most of them tempera paintings.

A 15th-century Italian painter working in tempera panels, Antonio da Firenze made altar pieces full of bright colors and delicate gold patterns. His Madonna and Child with a Bishop, St John the Baptist and Angels shows Mary and Jesus surrounded by saints in a gilded frame. The same calm figures appear in his Crucifixion with Mary and St John the Evangelist.

Peek at the gold-leaf halos and you’ll see how light played off the paint five hundred years ago. Tap Madonna and Child with a Bishop, St John the Baptist and Angels to look closer.
