The Kota Master

The Kota Master was an anonymous painter active at the Rajput court of Kota in Rajasthan during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Because no historical inscription preserves his name, art historians identify him through a distinctive body of work first isolated by the scholar Stuart Cary Welch, who grouped a set of dynamic hunting and battle scenes from Kota and Bundi under this attribution. Milo Beach later refined Welch's taxonomy, distinguishing the Hada Master and several subsidiary hands, yet the core attribution of a principal Kota Master remains securely established through a cluster of works in major collections.

The artist may have received training in the Deccani state of Golconda, for his compositions favor the energetic diagonal thrusts and calligraphic line work associated with Golconda painting, which itself drew upon Turkoman prototypes. His animated depictions of beasts in combat, elephants locked in mortal struggle, lions scaling trees, rhinoceroses thundering across the page, constitute some of the most powerful images of the Indian hunt. In these works he combined deft ink drawing with lightly applied color washes, creating surfaces that make viewers feel, in Welch's phrase, the thud of feet and the clang of bells.

The Kota Master was equally adept at intimate courtly subjects, as seen in his Radha and Krishna Walk in a Flowering Grove at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where intertwining bodies and flowering trees translate poetic emotion into visual form. The hunting idiom he perfected became a hallmark of the Kota atelier, persisting for nearly a century after his death and shaping the identity of one of Rajasthan's most vigorous schools of painting.
